An Cosan Glas ‘Loinnir’ Sculpture Trail

An Cosán Glas which means ‘The Green Path’ was the title originally given to a series of environmental sculpture workshops which took place during the annual Earagail Arts Festival. It was set up in 1995 to give an opportunity for young people to take part in creating large-scale pieces of temporary sculpture from natural materials such as stones, earth, foliage, and found objects and to instil in them an awareness and appreciation of their environment. This sculpture project provides a unique opportunity for children in rural communities who would rarely have access to such arts activities.

Initially, the gardens of Ballyconnel House, a former landlord’s demesne were used. By the year 2000, some of the plants were becoming depleted, and it was felt that new materials would inspire fresh ideas, and so the project took place on the nearby Falcarragh beach. In 2002, a further development took place in which An Cosán Glas toured around different locations in north west Donegal.

Since 2004, the project (now given the name of Loinnir, meaning light, radiance) has taken place on the shores of Magheraroarty, a sand dune peninsula situated between Errigal mountain and Tory Island near the towns of Falcarragh and Gortahork. The Sculpture Trail has become a night time event with huge illuminated sculptures nestled amongst the sand dunes. Loinnir comprises two weeks of art, craft and sculpture workshops for children tutored by professional artists followed by a week in which the artists make their own pieces of sculpture. The sculptures created by the children and the artists culminates in an exhibition over two nights with film, musicians and light shows. It has become the Grand Finale event of the Earagail Arts Festival and attracts audiences of 2,000 and more.

The core group of artists comprises Deirdre Brennan, Annjo Carr, Seamus Kennedy, Billy Wynter, Micky McFadden and Cathal McGinley. Each year, additional artists are invited to take part and add new skills, ideas, and methods. Other local artists and visitors to the area are often inspired to create their own pieces during the project.

An Cosan Glas artists have created projects throughout the north west region of Ireland. For further information, please feel free to contact us
